How We Became Ranchers Overnight

Remember when you were a kid and you told your cousin you were going to be an astronaut when you grew up and they split their ribs laughing at you. That time you stood there speechless watching them point a mocking finger at you while your cheeks burned with shame. You vowed then you would never mention it to anyone again, not even to your own mama. As an adult I felt a similar anxiety about our dream of becoming farmers. There was a distant cousin in the form of our bank account laughing any time my husband and I daydreamed about how rewarding it would be to raise our own chickens, pigs, sheep, goats, and cows. I could tell it wasn’t going to happen, so I gave up and moved on, embracing our downtown apartment lifestyle. But my husband didn’t, and I was frustrated by his unwillingness to give [...]

Overcoming Writer’s Block

I've been quiet here and on Facebook lately. Some of you have asked for updates, others have expressed concern. I am well my dear readers, and it does good to my heart to hear from you. My kitchen is still bubbling with homemade broths every night. My pantry is still permeated with the pungent smells of lacto-fermented veggies and herbal tinctures. I am committed to making wholesome, nourishing meals for myself and my husband. What has changed then, you might ask. Why haven’t I been sharing my culinary escapades ripe with Eastern European anecdotes? It's a question I've been exploring myself. This fall when we returned from our trip to Europe I began sharing our adventures on the blog. I had so many ideas for posts, photos, outlines, funny stories. But to my surprise, instead of being lighthearted and fun, the posts were heavy with my past. I felt that I was being [...]

Paleo and Nut-Free Strawberry Coffee Cake Recipe PLUS Mediterranean Paleo Cookbook Review & Giveaway

This weekend my housemates and I shared a big breakfast. As I walked into the kitchen the smell of vanilla, baked butter, and warm brown sugar kissed my nostrils and I sighed heavily... coffeecake was being baked in the  oven. Unfortunately, I could only smell it. When I first graduated college, I took on the chef position at a quaint bed n' breakfast in town. Every morning I would watch the sun rise while sipping on a cup of tea and waiting for the coffee cake, muffins, scones, or madeleines to bake. Any of the leftovers from breakfast were typically split between the employees and my mid-morning break would often consist of inhaling delicious pastries. Imagine my disappointment  when I discovered that gluten and dairy are the cause of my indigestion, bloat, and eczema! When I got Caitlin's book Mediterranean Paleo Cooking in the mail, I knew what I wanted to make: coffee cake. The beautiful photography [...]

New Year, New You Summit 2014: A FREE Online Conference!

For a long time, I relied on the medical establishment for advice. Every doctor's visited reaffirmed that I did not know the first thing about health, and I relied on them for guidance. I tried to drink in every little piece of information they bestowed upon me, but unfortunately they didn't give me much to work with. A visit to the doctor didn't usually take more than five minutes with an actual doctor (although I would wait for hours in the various staging rooms) and I always came home with list of questions I didn't get to ask since the whole thing was so "efficient". Since doctors didn't seem to have much time for me, I turned to books and the internet to do my own research. They pushed me to take my health into my own hands and make my own choices, and while real doctors are and usually [...]

Christmas 2013 Giveaway: 18 Piece Tempered Glasslock Storage Containers

I am thrilled to announce the first giveaway on The Kitchen Rag! I hope this is the first of many more! The holidays are rapidly approaching and I would love to have you all over to my kitchen for a lovely meal and lively conversation about food, and health, and life. But since that's impossible, I decided to give the the gift of a giveaway instead! Regular plastic containers can leach bisphenol-A, phtalates, and other xenoestrogens into your family's food, and many studies have evaluated bisphenol-A as a hormone disrupter, which alters the body's normal hormonal activity. (Source) In addition to that, plastic containers tend to degrade rapidly and have to be thrown out frequently. Since they are often not recyclable, that means the end up in land fills, polluting our planet and ultimately our bodies. Start the new year with a new set of tempered glass containers to avoid [...]

Black Friday Sale 2013

Although I am spending this Black Friday petting some cute goats on my friend's farm and enjoying a delicious bowl of chili topped with lots of laughter and good conversation, I confess I did do some shopping on line. My weakness - books! Since I am such an avid reader I am always trying to find good deals on them. If you share my love for nutrition and reading you might enjoy browsing through these great ebooks (and an online class!), all more than 60% off until Monday! But before diving into the book collection, let's talk about water. Did you know that more than 33% of all families in Cambodia don't have access to clean water? It's not that they don't have running water, like when I grew up. This is far more serious. Many people must walk over three hours to retrieve water, and even then it is [...]

Your Chance to Help Save Gutenberg

Photo Credit (via Francois Truffaut) I would highly suggest you check out savegutenberg.com. Read below to find out why: Are you dissatisfied with conventional modern education? Worried that most schools are failing to equip people with the intellectual tools required to be good people and good citizens? Maybe you have noticed that most modern education is designed primarily to produce passive consumerist serfs, and are looking for a way to break free from this pattern of cultural disintegration and instead, broaden the horizons of your mind and soul. Maybe you want this for your friends or children? In most of the world, education is trending toward fragmentation and specialization. At higher levels, it is often devoted specifically to some narrow occupational training. This has contributed to a culture incapable of critical thought and doomed to repeat the forgotten mistakes of the past. We can see the results of this around us [...]
